A lot of people in the GOP like VDH because he caters to those who do not actually read books but like to think of themselves being in favor of “standards” and “classics.”
@Sam Lowry
Today while channel surfing to avoid Iowa and errands, ran into SNL Best of Will Farrell and they played ‘Cowbell’ sketch entirely twice in the same 1 hour clip show. Right after read your post. The universe is talking . . .
@DrLeoStrauss
While reading that Washington City Paper/WaPo story you posted, all I could think of was that Blue Öyster Cult/Behind the Music parody. Good times. And Christopher Walken is sublime. I haven’t watched much SNL since the early 90s, but will occasionally catch a link to a particularly funny sketch. About the only consistently funny things coming out of SNL these days are videos by Andy Samberg.
RedPhillip :IKR! My sympathy is entirely with Muffin, poor baby. Ima gonna retweet so hard! Srsly.
I nominate the Good Doctor to begin compiling the Manga version of our decline from empire into whatever comes next.
Seconded…or at least some Sunday funnies. Manga McLauglin Group?

Yes, poor Muffin, agree Phillip. Funny you should mention manga. Was just thinking a manga might be fun. We’d all be characters together watching events unfold while our lives continue with various comedic interludes. Started thinking of an arc/outlining a ‘story bible’ together perhaps in an upcoming beach visit. And Muffin, of course!
That Weston alternative speech is really comically bad : “i know you’re sad and angry.”
So typical – only an academic liberal would think to begin a speech on such a depressing and presumptuous note.
Recalls some terrible teachers and professors in days gone by.
Besides it’s absoluely nothing like FDR’s thunderbolt style of speaking or JFK’s cant free Soresonian masterpieces. But he thinks it is.
Sorenson – btw — shortly before he died – noted the deep decline in Obama’s rhetoric since he became President.

WaPo as front for kaplan test prep is like a mobbed up pizza parlour opening a conspicuous social club to front for the pizza shop. Which is the respectable biz?
The relationship w Zuckerman’s Boston Properties and DailyNews made sense because BostP has so much interaction with City Hall and other politicos.
One wonders what the break up value of the parent company would be. From JWB’s business model point of view, the WaPo properties are not ‘synergistic’ or even rationally aligned except as you say to give liquidity to the paper.
We’re saved!? The Washington Post is going all populist! (Of course, given that “populist” has also been used to describe the Tea Party, I shudder to think what a “populist” major newspaper actually means).
But still, one hopes that historians sifting through the ashes will come across this: “The Post will always compete with the inside-the-Beltway journals and with the Times. It has to. But its future lies not with the rich; it lies with the citizenry. This newspaper must be the one source of high-quality, probing Washington news that readers in this region and across the country can look to for holding their government accountable. This publication must be for all Americans.”

Wow. Was that Post editorial ham-fisted. Must be worse than it looks on the inside.
